Premier League review: The stats and facts from a thrilling season

Another gripping Premier League season came to a dramatic end with 39 goals scored on matchday 38.

Manchester City pipped Liverpool to the title by a single point, coming back from two goals down against Aston Villa on the final day to send the Etihad into rapturous scenes.

Tottenham made a late surge to secure Champions League football over bitter rivals Arsenal while Everton and Leeds survived relegation as Burnley’s six-year stay in the top flight came to an end.

We take a look at the best statistics for every month of a campaign filled with memorable moments.

August

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba enjoyed a bright start to his season, as he became the seventh player in Premier League history to assist four goals in a single game in the Red Devils' 5-1 win over Leeds on the opening day.

Mohamed Salah’s charge towards the Golden Boot kicked off with a goal at Norwich, when he became the first player in the competition’s history to score in five consecutive opening weekends.

Michail Antonio made history for West Ham with his late brace in their 4-1 win over Leicester, which fired him to the top of the club’s list of all-time top Premier League goalscorers, overtaking Paolo Di Canio.

September

A 3-0 victory at home to Aston Villa gave Chelsea their 600th Premier League victory — becoming only the second team to do so after the Red Devils.

Norwich lost their 15th consecutive top-flight game under boss Daniel Farke, the first club in the history of the competition to do so under a single manager. The German coach was later dismissed on November 6.

Salah broke yet another record in September, when he scored his 100th goal for the Reds in just 151 league matches, reaching a century of goals in fewer appearances than any other player in the club's history.

October

Liverpool became the first English top-flight outfit in history to score three or more goals in seven consecutive away games in all competitions following their 5-0 win at Watford.

Jurgen Klopp's men went on to inflict a 5-0 defeat on Manchester United later in the month, the first time the Red Devils had lost by a margin of five or more strikes at Old Trafford without scoring since 1955.

Winger Wilfried Zaha became the first Crystal Palace player to notch 50 Premier League goals when he found the target in a shock 2-0 win at Manchester City.

November

The division's last unbeaten record fell when Liverpool lost 3-2 at West Ham, ending the club's record-equalling 25-match run without defeat.

Steven Gerrard became only the second manager to win his first two Premier League games in charge of Aston Villa, after John Gregory in 1998. 

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was axed as Manchester United boss following their 4-1 loss at Watford, which was their biggest league defeat against a promoted side since September 1989.

December 

Cristiano Ronaldo made headlines when he bagged his 800th and 801st career goals for club and country in United’s 3-2 win over Arsenal.

City’s Raheem Sterling became the 32nd player to net 100 goals in the Premier League, becoming the eighth youngest to do so at the age of 27 years and three days.

Newcastle’s woes seemed never-ending in December as they broke a record for the wrong reasons, conceding 80 goals in a calendar year, the most of any club in the history of the competition.

January

Gunners centre-back Gabriel’s red card in his side’s 2-1 loss against Man City on New Year's Day was his club’s 100th sending off in the Premier League, the first team in the competition to reach this total.

Tottenham pulled off a miracle in their away trip to Leicester, when supersub Steven Bergwijn bagged two goals in the 95th and 97th minute to seal a 3-2 victory, the latest a team has been losing but gone on to win a Premier League contest.

United forward Marcus Rashford scored his fourth stoppage-time league winner when the Red Devils edged past West Ham, a feat that no other player has achieved in the competition’s history.

February

Romelu Lukaku produced underwhelming numbers on his £97.5million return to Chelsea and his appearance at Palace saw the Belgian striker have just seven touches of the ball — the fewest for a Premier League player in a game since data has been available.

Deadly duo Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son combined for a league goal for the 37th time in Spurs' victory at Leeds, breaking Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard’s record tally of 36.

Leeds conceded 20 league goals in February under Marcelo Bielsa, the most a side has ever shipped in a single calendar month, while they became the second ever team to concede three or more goals in five consecutive Premier League matches.

March

Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk set a new record in the Reds' 1-0 home win over West Ham, becoming the first man to play 60 home league Premier League matches without defeat for a single club (52 wins, eight draws).

Kane moved above fellow Englishman Lampard into fourth in the competition's all-time goalscorers list with his strike at Brighton, also becoming the division's top away marksman with 95 efforts.

City completed the league double over United for the fifth time since 2008 with a 4-1 home victory — the first team to achieve this feat against the Red Devils in the Premier League era.

April

Defender Aymeric Laporte picked up his 82nd league victory in his 100th game in the competition when City took three points at Burnley, the most wins for any player in their first century of matches.

James Ward-Prowse scored his 13th direct Premier League free-kick at Leeds, moving behind only David Beckham on the all-time list.

Rejuvenated under Eddie Howe, Newcastle won six consecutive home league games for the first time in 18 years.

May

Leeds picked up their 95th and 96th yellow cards against the Gunners, setting a new record for the most bookings for a club within a single Premier League season.

The Yorkshire outfit were able to avoid relegation on the final day however becoming the first side since Wigan in 2010-11 to do so when starting their final game in the drop zone.

City came from two goals down to win a league game for the first time since February 2005, clinching the title with a 3-2 victory over Aston Villa.
