Eto’o pleads guilty

Iconic former striker Samuel Eto’o has pleaded guilty to £3.2million of tax fraud relating to his time with Barcelona.

Cameroonian Eto’o — who also enjoyed spells with Inter Milan, Chelsea and Everton — failed to declare income from the transfer of his image rights between 2006 and 2009.

He must now pay back the money he owes as well as a further fine of £1.55m, while the Spanish court also handed him a 22-month suspended prison sentence.

Eto’o said: "I admit the facts and I am going to pay what I'm due, but let it be known that I was a just a child then and that I always did what my former agent Jose Maria Mesalles, who I considered like a father, asked me to do at that time."

Johnstone to join Palace

England international goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is poised to sign a four-year deal with Crystal Palace on July 1.

The 29-year-old’s contract with West Brom expires at the end of this month and he has opted to leave the Baggies.

Tottenham and Manchester United had also been linked with moves for Johnstone but Patrick Vieira’s Eagles have won the race for his signature.

Johnstone will likely compete with current Palace No1 Vicente Guaita for a starting berth next term as he looks to reclaim a place in Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad.

Kompany meets his Clarets

Vincent Kompany has officially begun life as Burnley boss after the Clarets returned to pre-season training.

Ex-Manchester City skipper Kompany was a surprise appointment at Turf Moor last week, taking the role after two years in charge of his boyhood club Anderlecht in Belgium.

The 36-year-old is tasked with leading Burnley back to the top flight at the first attempt in 2022-23 after their six-year Premier League stay was ended with last season's relegation.

UEFA announce Unity Euro Cup

A new football tournament specifically created for refugees will take place in Switzerland next week.

UEFA’s new Unity Euro Cup will see eight sides made up of 70% refugee and 30% non-refugee players compete at the governing body’s headquarters in Nyon.

The event is designed to help to strengthen links between communities and displaced people with Austria, Belgium, Republic of Ireland, Germany, France, Malta, Italy and Switzerland all submitting teams.

Michele Uva, UEFA’s football and social responsibility director, said: "Our common goal is to help refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced people to remain physically and mentally healthy and become part of their host community through the power of football."

Cucho joins Columbus

MLS side Columbus Crew have announced the signing of Watford forward Cucho Hernandez.

The 23-year-old Colombian was one of the Hornets' more impressive performers last term, netting five times in 25 Premier League appearances.

However, they were unable to avoid relegation and his departure for an undisclosed fee has now been confirmed.

Crew president Tim Bezbatchenko said: "Cucho is a world-class player who is still at an early stage of his career, and we could not be more excited to welcome him to the Columbus Crew."
